JEE Main 2022! Marks vs Rank vs Percentile- What is the difference?

Touted to be one of the toughest exams in India, Joint Entrance Examination – Main aka JEE-Main is a computer based test for admission to various technical undergraduate programs in engineering, and planning across colleges in India. The exams are conducted by the JEE Apex Board for admission of various courses in top colleges of our country like National Institutes of Technology and Indian Institutes of Information Technology are based on the rank secured in the JEE-Main.
It is an important test for students who aspire to gain admission to India’s top central government engineering institutes. For a candidate, who is appearing this exam, it is important to know JEE Main scores and percentile. A knowledge allows them to design an effective study strategy. Usually, students are not aware about JEE Mains marks versus percentile. The National Testing Agency (NTA) publishes JEE Main results in percentile scores for candidates. The JEE Main percentile scores are the normalised grades and not the candidates’ actual marks.
To clear all the doubts around this topic, here’s a difference between JEE 2022 Main marks, rank and percentile. Before that would you like to know why JEE Results Announced in Percentile? The JEE exam is conducted in two sessions so there is the possibility of a difference in the difficulty level of the questions. So to overcome this barrier, normalisation is accepted. The normalisation of marks is not the actual marks but it is a comparative score which is calculated by the NTA formula. After the compilation is done of the students’ marks, NTA uses the normalisation formula to arrive at a percentile score in Chemistry, Maths and physics.
JEE Percentile Score
- It is calculated based on how an applicant has performed. The scores are compared to all other applicants who appeared for the exam.
- It is not the percentage score or the raw marks.
JEE Main Marks vs Percentile
- They must comprehend which rank is assigned to each Percentile. It can be done by analysing previous years’ scores.
- This helps them in estimating their JEE main percentile for 2022 with their JEE main score.
Disclaimer: This is when the paper is of moderate level. If the paper is tougher, there are chances that your percentile will be better.

JEE Percentile vs Rank 2022 (Expected)
The statistics for Percentile vs rank is released after the results are declared.
The factors that are taken into consideration for Rank are as follows:
- Total number of candidates registered
- Number of questions in the paper
- Difficulty level of the exam
Normalisation Method
- The NTA uses the normalisation formula to calculate percentile scores for each subject, including the total.
- Each session’s highest score will receive the same Percentile of 100.
- The percentile score is used to generate the JEE Main merit list.
- To avoid ties among applicants with the same scores, the percentile scores is calculated up to 7 decimal places.
JEE Main 2022 tiebreaker Guidelines
Here are some guidelines that are followed when two or more students get equal scores.
- Candidates with a better Mathematics percentile score are going to be ranked above.
- If the tie is still there, the applicant whose Physics percentile is higher will be assigned the higher position.
- If the tie is still there, the applicant with the higher percentile score in Chemistry will be ranked higher.
